On February 11th, 2024, Reverend Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins delivered a sermon at Bethlehem Baptist Church about the injustice that the millions of prisoners in the United States are facing. The Reverend gives numerous examples of how Jesus would come to the aid of those in need, including those that are imprisoned. The purpose of this instagram post was to spread the emotionally driven message to members of the church and anyone who was looking for similar content. It was also made to raise awareness of the current treatment of prisoners and their families from our communities.  The target audience of this piece of media content spans a very wide population including followers and non-followers of Jesus, members of the Bethlehem Baptist Church specifically, and family/community members of incarcerated people. This message was delivered during Black History Month, which is a perfect time to bring awareness to such a prevalent issue. Also, in encapsulates how the church can be a space to promote better treatment towards prisoners to their predominantly African-American worshippers. Reverend Dr. Aidsand F. Wright-Riggins concludes this sermon with two major points; First, we are ignoring the imprisoned members of our society due to the politics of responsibility and second, Religion itself obstructs our ability to have empathy and compassion for these prisoners. Messages like these are not only important for memebrs of teh church to hear, they serve as reminders to everyone in our community to treat prisoners like human beings and to remember that have struggling families as well.
