<text>Friends:

Though I do not wish to engage in an extended acrimonious debate with Dr. Nagy, I would like to set the
record straight on a few points: 1. 1 did not call Or. Nagy a "narrowminded bigot." He rightly points out that since I
have no "psychic insight" into the number of right ways to love he thinks there are, I can 't conclude that he
thinks there is only one-- so I will not draw that conclusion.

I stand by the statement that it is bigotry to advocate discrimination against people on the basis of sexual
orientation -- just as much as it is bigotry to advocate discrimination on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, or religion. At this time, I have no reason to believe Dr. Nagy advocates that.

2. I said that the biggest thing that causes unhappiness in the lives of gay people is prejudice and discrimination directed at them by bigots. I did not say that this is the only thing that could create unhappiness for a gay person.
People have problems of a variety of sorts, regardless of sexual orientation.

3. Obviously in the United States, gay men are disproportionately afflicted with A.I.D.S., and that is a
tragedy. But why argue that they should change their basic sexual orientation, which essentially cannot be
changed? Argue instead against promiscuity and unsafe sexual practices. Note that in other parts of the world,
A.I.D.S is as prevalent in the heterosexual as the homosexual population.

Note, too, that in the U.S. the category of people least likely to be affected by A.I.D.S is exclusively homosexual women. If A.I.D.S-avoidance is a reason to eschew a particular sexual "Iifestyle," wouldn't all heterosexual
women be better off becoming lesbians?

4. I did not say that "most adult homosexuals
lack the ability to control their behavior." We all have little control over the objects of our sexual desire. I suppose that all of us are capable of controlling sexual behavior and living a celibate " lifestyle." But why? Physical intimacy and giving of mutual pleasure with someone you love is one of life's great joys. Why should it be available only to those deemed sexually correct?

5. I certainly do not agree that adulterers and pedophiles have no ability to control their behavior. And I Consider those acts wrong for reasons other than the nature of the sexual desire involved.

But finally, what is the point of debating whether or not it would be a wise decision for a person to choose
to be gay? That just is not how it works.

Gay people simply are, and have always been with us.
What I am arguing is that no one should be denied civil rights on the basis of sexual orientation. Nor should people be shamed and made to feel "wrong" because of it.

Sincerely,

Gina Oboler

This allowed for AAAS to invite guest lecturer Rachel Daniel ’06 to lecture on the use of drag in media. The event consists of two parts: A talk on Tuesday October 22 in Pfahler Auditorium and an open lunch discussion in Unity House on Wednesday October 23, 2013. Utilizing drag as a tool, Daniel’s asserts that Tyler Perry, Steve Harvey, and Rickey Smiley have used the art from to make claims about race, gender, class and theology as they perform Black Women. Daniel’s was a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts/Amherst in American Studies at the time. This program was created in collaboration with Multicultural Services, now known as the Institute for Inclusion and Equity, and the Chaplain’s office. </text>

Earvin "Magic" Johnson's shocking revelation that he had tested HIV positive is truly a tragedy. For a man that positively affected billions with his athelitc prowess and decent conduct on and off the court, his contraction of the fatal AIDS virus will affect people in an entirely different way. As should be expected from this class individual, he will use his unfortunate circumstance to help others. With the same vigor with which he dunked basketballs and assisted his teammates, he will put out the message that NONE of us are invincible. One regretful sexual or drug-related experience is all it takes.
Whether Magic was a homosexual, cheated on his wife or used an unclean needle does not matter now. What does matter is that we all realize, especially while we are young and vibrant, it only takes one slip-up and our lives can come to an abrupt end. Magic Johnson is only one of millions to contract the AIDS virus. But what sets him apart from the others is that as a heroic public figure, he shows us that EVERYONE is subject to this dreaded disease. If a vibrant personality with exceptional athletic talents can contract AIDS, so can the intelligent college student. Remember that!

There was an immediate, powerful reaction to Mr. John Ronning's opinion letter in last week's issue concerning the GALA organization. Some people expressed support for the content of the letter, others were strongly against it, and many were simply amazed that anyone, especially a college instructor, would actually make such views public.

I have been asked by several people how I could have possibly printed such a letter, and my answer is simple. It is for the same reason that I went against my associate editor's objections to print Michael Cyr's article in the Octoboer 22 issue, before GALA was recognized by the SAC as an official college organization. I believe that, as a part of the Ursinus community, both Michael and Mr. Ronning have the right to express themselves. I applaud both for their courage in publicizing their beliefs and opinions.

The debate that has raged on in The Grizdy over homosexulality has gotten OLD!

Is there no other news in this world? Even OJ. Simpson reports would be better than this.

Dr. Nagy and his supporters have their opinions. Everyone else has their own opinions.

My suggestion is wise up. You can't force your beliefs on other people. They will end up resenting
you for it. Grow up!
