I could have used a nicer term like harassment, or slack. Personally, I do not find any other word that quite expresses my disgust for the article written by Mr. Ronning in last week's edition of the Grizzly. I would have never expected this "crap" to come from the mouth of a seemingly educated member of the faculty, let alone someone who teaches in a LIBERAL arts atmosphere. I may be speaking a bit harshly. I truly believe that every individual is entitled to their own opinions. Every individual has the right to is entitled to his own opinion [sic]. I know some people have not accepted the fact that the voices of the gay culture are becoming more audible each day. Some people find that particular way of life repulsive, or sick. I understand that the whole concept of homosexuality may be totally incomprehensible to many. Speaking from a heterosexual standpoint, I can not conceive what it feels like to be a gay or lesbian. There is nothing wrong with my admitting so. But, I feel that a person is a certain way for a reason and I have to respect their preferences. Being a homosexual does not make you a pervert, a partner to sheep and dogs, a child molester......it is just a character difference which does not retract from being a good or bad person. Ronning has every right to feel the way he does. I am objecting most strongly to the way he expresses those sentiments. I do not know from which source he found all of his "documented" evidence he so eloquently wrote about. I would merely like to state that sick perversions are just as prevalent in the "straight" culture, if not more so. I pity any of Ronning's students who may be questioning their sexual identity. I would advise them to keep quiet at least till final grades have been submitted. I give those members of GALA much credit for their courage during the past month. It is distressing to see such uninformed opinions coming from the supposedly enlightened academic community. Dr. Nagy seeks to condemn homosexuality by associating it with pedophilia and adultery, two morally disturbing practices that statistics have shown are overwhelmingly, and ironically, associated with heterosexuals. It leads me to think It leads me to think that the roots of this vehement dislike of homosexuals stems more from ignorance. Really, Dr. Nagy, the day of the self-loathing queer is long gone. And those who "experiment" with homosexuality, as if it were some chemical reaction that could be avoided, are not doomed to "make themselves and others miserable." Quite the contrary. Most gays and lesbians live happy and healthy lives. Homosexuals are your doctors, policemen, congressmen, and yes, even professors. Most want the security of family, the love of another person, and the right to live in peace just like you. Whereas Dr. Nagy complains about the censoring of one of his former colleagues, gays and lesbians are faced everyday with increased levels of violence, teen suicide three times the national average, and public policy like Colorado's Amendment: 2. While I feel for his colleague, let's put things in perspective. Most current research has shown a positive change in attitude toward homosexuality when the respondent merely knows someone who is gay. The real concern of the ideologues is not the moral direction of our country, but the protection of their dirty little secret. They are deathly afraid the world will figure out that lesbians and gays are just like them. Homosexuality has been a part of civilization for as long as there has been civilization. May I suggest that it is Dr. Nagy who is in the closet. As it is a safe bet he has taught literally hundreds of lesbians and gay students in his classes and is probably acquainted with many others, his rather narrow definition of morality wouldn't allow him to see these people as friends. As some of you already noted, this thread is tiresome and we have better things to think about at college like the new mall and what's on television. I am going to take you on a journey that most heterosexuals will never see. Do not expect him to be as excited about meeting a hetersexual as you might be about meeting a homosexual...he was probably raised by them. Do no immediately start talking about your girlfriend or wife in order to make it clear that you are straight...he probably already knows and could care less. Do not tell him that it is wrong to prefer men and that every man wants to hold and love a smooth sensual woman. These are common fallacies and should be treated as such. Do not ask him how he got this way...Instead, ask yourself how you got that way. Do not assume that he is dying to talk about being gay. Do not expect him to refrain from talking about being gay.
