Their consitution is currently under review by SAC. This article was submitted to The Grizzly by the GALA organization. Last week, the newly founded Gay and Lesbian Alliance began its first "visibility campaign" on campus. Letters were sent to all students, to introduce GALA to the student body. Similar letters were also sent to the faculty to elicit their support. And on Friday October 11, over four hundred National Coming Out Day fliers adorned most campus buildings. The message: Gays and Lesbian are a part of this campus, and there are more of us than you think! The GALA will exist to serve several functions on campus. First, to provide a social outlet for gay, lesbian, or bisexual students. For example, the third Friday of every month, the Gay/Lesbian Student Union at Penn holds dances for the area's large gay student population, which we welcome anyone to attend with us. Second, GALA will locate, attend and perhaps sponsor, events to increase our own self-awareness. Our hope is to educate young gay men and women about the wonderful Gay Culture that exists in the world and to promote a feeling of self-worth and self-acceptance. Third, GALA hopes to act as peer counselors to students who are having difficulty accepting their sexuality. Lastly, the GALA hopes to heighten awareness on campus, and to combat homophobia. Plans are already underway to bring speakers to campus and run workshops. For studnets interested in contacting the GALA, we have formed a network of faculty contacts. Interested students can approach any of these contacts, who will pass your name and telephone number on to the Executive Board of GALA. We promise discretion and complete confidentiality. This number is up 42 percent over 1989. According to the task force's policy institute this increase may be tied to better reporting of statistics and higher media interest. Kimberly Bergalis, a 23-year old woman who contracted AIDS from her dentist, called on Congress to require all health-care workers and hospital patients to be tested for AIDS. They tend to think that homosexuals, like myself, are a different kind if person, not just someone with a different sexual orientation. Many guys fumble over what to say or how to act when they discover that "that guy over there is gay!" So for all those men having difficulty dealing with gays on a social level, here are some tips I happen to have. WHEN YOU MEET A GAY MALE: TIPS FOR THE HETEROSEXUAL MALE Do not run screaming from the room...this is rude. If you must back away, do so slowly and with discretion. Do not assume that he is attracted to you. Do not assume that he is not attracted to you. Do not assume that you are not attracted to him. Do not expect him to be as excited about meeting a hetersexual as you might be about meeting a homosexual...he was probably raised by them. Do no immediately start talking about your girlfriend or wife in order to make it clear that you are straight...he probably already knows and could care less. Do not tell him that it is wrong to prefer men and that every man wants to hold and love a smooth sensual woman. These are common fallacies and should be treated as such. Do not ask him how he got this way...Instead, ask yourself how you got that way. Do not assume that he is dying to talk about being gay. Do not expect him to refrain from talking about being gay. Do not trivialize his experience by assuming it is a bedroom issue only. He is gay 24 hours a day. Text Any textual data included in the document I wish to state that I believe that everyone has the right to voice their opinions. In last week's Grizzly Dr. Douglas Nagy did this, and this week I offer my rebuttal to his article. I am not a member of the school's homosexual community, but still I was offended by what this professor wrote in his paper. We were all treated to a grand little lecture of the Judeo-Christian standards for sexual behavior, and how homosexuals are deviants. After reading it, I was fuming with anger. I'm very, very intrigued as to just what the standard Judeo-Christian sexual practices are these days. I know what people in 17th Century New England thought they were. They used to sleep in beds with boards between them and their spouse. They put scarlet letters on women and men who had affairs. They were not allowed to dance or show any skin other than hands and face. In that time homosexuals would have been hanged for their deeds. Let us not forget, Dr. Nagy, that in that time, chemists, or alchemists, would have also been hanged. They were called "witches." If I am interpreting my Bible correctly, people who have premarital sex are sinners. People who have sex for pleasure rather than reproduction are sinners. People who masturbate are sinners. By the looks of this, probably not a single, solitary soul here at Ursinus is fit toenter Heaven, and all will bum in Hellfire for all eternity. Well, imagine that. I guess most of us are deviants, eh? I think that sex is something which is part of nature. All animals do it, and so do we. It is actually a beautiful thing, not something of deviance. This concept applies to any situation in which two people who care about each other make the mutual decision to "do it." Whether these people are man and woman, man and man, woman and woman, or a group of men and women, it is their right to pursue their own desires. Even if I didn't include sex in this discussion, I believe that Dr. Nagy's comments are wrong. Not all gay and lesbian couples are sex fiends. Some, and I believe this to be the majority, are in it for love or at least companionship. So what if their love is for someone of the same gender as they are ... it is still love. You never know who you are going to fall in love with, it just happens. Whether homosexuality is caused by something genetic, or is merely a choice, it is about something much higher than deviance. I know too many people who are unable to find love. If one man's happiness is found in another man's arms, I say good for them. I'm happy for them. Just imagine, if everyone was able to find someone who truly loved them, male or female, how truly Heaven-like this earth would be.
