Subject
The topic of the resource
Student interest in having more Black studies courses added to Ursinus College.
Description
An account of the resource
“Focus: Nate Dupree Can a Black Man Find Happiness at Ursinus? Well…” is an interview written by Richard Whaley and published November 7, 1974 Ursinus Weekly. In the interview Dupree mentions that he would like to add a Black studies program and black administrators/professors to Ursinus college. While Dupree does not expect the school to implement such programs due to their cost, he believes the school might change if there is pressure from the government. The courses, or lack thereof, may even be the reason why students transfer out of the college. However, the lack of black students, and other minority students, is shocking to Dupree; who has moved from Philadelphia to Ursinus in pursuit of his political science degree. As the college seeks to diversify itself through other means (i.e. bringing in foreign students according to Dupree) the desire to have more inclusive curriculum can be traced as far back as the 1970s.

African American and Africana Studies Minor Requirement description
Subject
The topic of the resource
A thorough explanation of the African American and Africana Studies program and the electives that may count towards the minor.
Description
An account of the resource
“African American and Africana Studies” is the minor requirement description written by the office of the Registrar and published in the 2004-2005 Ursinus College Course Catalog. The African American and Africana Studies program allows students to study the experiences of people in the African Diaspora (i.e. The United States, Latin America and Africa). In order to attain the minor, students must take two classes: Issues in African American and Africana Studies and Readings in African American and Africana Studies. The minor requires 4 additional electives which span across 11 different departments. While this is the first catalogue to include the African American Africana Studies minor, several of the courses have been offered in years prior. No more than 2 courses from a single department will be counted towards the minor.

Dr. Patricia Lott describes her new course “Race and the University.”
Description
An account of the resource
This article focuses on a new course called “Race and University” taught in Fall of 2018 started by Dr. Patricia Lott, an Assistant Professor of African American and Africana Studies. The course is described as a digital project where students create exhibits on a web- publishing platform called Omeka. These exhibits archive the history of race and racism at Ursinus College by students publishing archival evidence of racialization at Ursinus. Dr. Lott’s course focuses on institutionalized racism in American higher education, and how it has delayed marginalized groups, since the inception of the first university, from receiving higher education. The course also covers a plethora of different issues and historical moments associated with race and racism in graduate schools. This article was published on October 4th, 2018 by the Ursinus English Department.

The topic of the resource
Recruitment and retention of students of color at Ursinus College
Description
An account of the resource
Staff writer, Nipun Suri, wrote “Black History Celebrated Across Ursinus Campus” on February 22, 2000, from the Ursinus student newspaper, The Grizzly. Paulette Patton was key in planning and creating cultural and artistic events designed to educate the Ursinus campus community of black history. Historical events were centered around the civil rights movement during the ’60s. Films were shown, brief lectures, and chapel services were held to “honor, remember, and celebrate the past.” Dean Todd McKinney weighs in his thoughts and feels that there needs to be more incorporation of black history than just one month of focus.
