Alabama Civil Rights Trip Was Living History for Students
Subject
The topic of the resource
Growth of the African American and Africana Studies Program at Ursinus College
Description
An account of the resource
In March 2012, during Ursinus College's spring break, eight students of Chaplain, Reverend Charles Rice's African American Religious Experience class, traveled to Alabama for a civil rights trip. The elective class's small size allowed for deep interactions between students during reflections and discussions. The trip included visits to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Kelly Ingram Park and a meeting with J.D. and Gwen Appling, civil rights leaders. After visiting Selma, the National Voting Rights Museum /Slavery and Civil War Museum a sophomore named Tyrell Martin reflected on his experience. He spoke of the life-changing impact the trip had on him and the realization it brought him of the privilege of people today. During reflection one evening, the students shared a sense of responsibility to share what they learned on behalf of equality. The trip was a living history experience for all involved.

Description
An account of the resource
Richard Richter memos the Senior Staff about his recent hiring of two black faculty members and a recruitment counselor in the Admissions Office for their plans to create the Bridge Program. This memo exhibits the progress being made on a strategic approach to having a more culturally diverse campus. Richter suggests questions for everyone to ask themselves about the sole purpose of the program and if the college has all the materials needed to properly handle any social and academic matter involving minority students. This is to pull together the right people and resources together so the program can smoothly go into motion.

Subject
The topic of the resource
Student interest in having more Black studies courses added to Ursinus College.
Description
An account of the resource
“Focus: Nate Dupree Can a Black Man Find Happiness at Ursinus? Well…” is an interview written by Richard Whaley and published November 7, 1974 Ursinus Weekly. In the interview Dupree mentions that he would like to add a Black studies program and black administrators/professors to Ursinus college. While Dupree does not expect the school to implement such programs due to their cost, he believes the school might change if there is pressure from the government. The courses, or lack thereof, may even be the reason why students transfer out of the college. However, the lack of black students, and other minority students, is shocking to Dupree; who has moved from Philadelphia to Ursinus in pursuit of his political science degree. As the college seeks to diversify itself through other means (i.e. bringing in foreign students according to Dupree) the desire to have more inclusive curriculum can be traced as far back as the 1970s.

Description
An account of the resource
The article was a student-conducted interview between Richard Whaley, the interviewer and creator of the article, and Nathaniel Dupree, a black political science major at the time. In this interview, the two discuss Nathaniel's general happiness on campus as he attempts to assimilate into college life. The article goes into questions such as first impression of Ursinus, professors and their treatment of students, and much more. Dupree goes into detail about his experiences on weekends, and his opinions on why students transfer from Ursinus to another institution. Specifically, Dupree talks a lot about being a minority on Ursinus' campus, and how he feels regarding that as it relates to social life and academics. This undoubtedly encompasses student retention, as he was one that happened to stay among a student body who others often left. However, Dupree also highlights the racial realities faced by black students(and more than likely minority students too) at the time, in their struggle to settle on Ursinus' campus.

Ursinus College campus, 2012
Description
An account of the resource
This article from the March 1st, 2012 edition of the Ursinus College Grizzly newspaper announces the beginning of a retreat for the college’s Board of Trustees. At this meeting the board plans to discuss a strategic diversity plan based on three campus diversity reports. These reports come from the Teagle Home Team, the Faculty Committee on Diversity, and the Presidential Committee on Race and Equality. There is a note from then-president Dr. Bobby Fong that the three recommendations “sometimes diverge”, and that the largest of these divergences concerns the implementation of a specific Chief Diversity Officer position (which one report suggests and the other two deem unnecessary). The report which argues for the new position asserts that the most pressing issues affecting campus diversity are those of “visibility and transparency,” and such a person would provide structure and clarity to all of the “diversity work” on campus. The article closes with the information that the Ursinus community can publicly discuss the reports after spring recess, and that Collegeville residents can contribute their ideas online. This article displays part of the back and forth discussions, particularly in 1987-1988, regarding the best ways to recruit and retain students of color.

Description
An account of the resource
This Ursinus Grizzly newspaper article from September 23, 1988 coincides with the release of the first official Ursinus College Bridge Program report describing and assessing the Bridge Program. The article goes on to explain what the program is and why it is significant, pointing out that “ethnic and cultural diversity has not been a hallmark of the college,” and calling the Bridge Program “one of the most innovative endeavors Ursinus has taken.” It details the courses taken by the “Bridgers” and some of the field trips and side programs as well. These included introduction to the college community, practice in the Word Processing Lab and video-taping lab, trips to the Batch Institute for Ethnic Studies in Center City, and to Eagleville Hospital for Personality Disorders (as the main course taught was introductory Psychology). The article finishes on a positive note, mentioning the contentedness of the students who participated and plans from the administration to expand funding for the following year.

Description
An account of the resource
“African American and Africana Studies” is the minor requirement description written by the office of the Registrar and published in the 2004-2005 Ursinus College Course Catalog. The African American and Africana Studies program allows students to study the experiences of people in the African Diaspora (i.e. The United States, Latin America and Africa). In order to attain the minor, students must take two classes: Issues in African American and Africana Studies and Readings in African American and Africana Studies. The minor requires 4 additional electives which span across 11 different departments. While this is the first catalogue to include the African American Africana Studies minor, several of the courses have been offered in years prior. No more than 2 courses from a single department will be counted towards the minor.
