<text>It’s prom time all across America.

All over the country, high school seniors are preparing to go out for one last dance before packing up and heading to college.

For many, prom is something that has been looked forward to all year.

But there are some who have shied away from conventional proms and have blazed their own trails.
Last spring, the Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays helped sponsor the first gay prom in St. Petersburg.

The prom was not the first of its kind in our country and will not be the last.

There are two gay proms scheduled in Long Island, N.Y., this year. Both of them will be the first of such events held there.

Of course, the event is being held independent of any schools in the area.

But those who feel going to a conventional prom does not conform to their specific needs will still have a place where they can dance with whomever they wish without coming under the scrutiny of those around them.

Florida and Long Island are not the only places where such events are being held.

Having gay proms is not a revolutionary idea in some parts of the country.

Boston has had a gay prom for 20 years and New York’s Harvey Milk School, an alternative school, has been holding a gay prom since the 1980’s.

But the idea of having smaller proms held for gay students in other parts of the country like Georgia, South Carolina and yes, Florida, has not exactly caught on fire.
Many people find the idea of homosexuality abhorrent and the idea of a gay prom even worse.

Some people feel there is not a need for gay proms.
They say the very idea of specializing for people who have different sexual orientations is ridiculous and should not be done.

We agree— just for different reasons.

For all the talk of tolerance in this country, we are still very backward when it comes to accepting the lives and life-styles of people who are different than us. Wrapping around the idea of same-sex relationships is exceedingly difficult for some. Because of that, homosexuality has become a dirty little secret for many people.

In the past, those who had different sexual orientations had to lie about who they really were. The same is true for many people who are gay now. They are ostracized simply for whom they chose to be with.

So much so that they feel they must organize their own proms in order to feel safe being with each other in a formal setting at the end of their high school careers.
Gay high school students are being made to segregate themselves from the rest of their peers.

That is not fair.

We disagree with the idea of having students all over the country have to organize gay proms because we disagree with the idea that homosexuals should have to feel like they must take themselves away from the rest of society in order to be accepted.

Our problem is not with the gay proms, but with the society that made them necessary.

People’s opinions on homosexuality must change if our society ever hopes to continue to advance.

There are a lot more reasons to not like a person than their sexual orientation, or race, or religion or any other capricious reasoning used to hate an individual based on their intrinsic beliefs and behaviors.

Hopefully, we will get to the point where homosexuals will feel welcome enough where they will not have to pull away from everyone else for fear of being renounced by everyone else.

<text>Recently, Dr. Phillip Johnson spoke at Ursinus about alternatives to Darwin's theory of natural selection. Dr. Johnson offered an explanation for the reason so many people believe in Darwinian evolution: it is an escape mechanism used by people to get away from the moral order of the universe as commanded by God. Accepting
the possibility that humans, in all their complexity, evolved according to the process of impersonal natural selection is effectively saying that God is not a necessary
prerequisite for humans to exist.

But,in making this claim, Dr. Johnson failed to realize that God is not the only source of morality. Just because a person may not acknowledge a God, and the moral laws that go along with that God, this does not mean that those people are prone to go on adulterous, murderous, not-loving-your-neighbor-as-yourself rampages through society. Most people recognize the destructiveness of such behaviors on their own, without the help of a God, and this prevents most of them from doing such things.

To draw Darwin's ideas out a little further, the whole concept of a God may be an adaptive device that was created by humans to help keep society functioning smoothly. "God" is a good adaptation because in order for moral laws to be effective, they need to be lodged with someone or something that is considered authoritative and legitimate beyond question, and that something can only be wholly outside of human nature- hence comes from Gods, created in different forms by human societies the world over, over all the time.

The moral laws of any society hold that society together in a shared sense of right and wrong, and the more people are synchronized with those ideas, the less conflict there should be. Less conflict means more stability, and more of a chance of presenting a unified front against outside threats to the society.

God and religions are pretty effective tools which societies have adopted to ensure their own continued existence.

Of course it all becomes ironic, yet tragic, when religion is used as the basis for great atrocities and crimes against humanity – because unfortunately, most religions have the idea that nobody else can believe something different about what God is or what God stands for. The once-adaptive concepts of religion and God are often used destructively, drawing lines between who can be loved, and who must be changed before they can be accepted.
It's a tragedy that concepts with such great potential for human society should be turned against each other, used as tools of intolerance and discrimination, and as a means of perpetuating stereotypes and hatred. Not all religions and concepts of God have this same bleak conclusion, but many of them do.

Therefore I take serious issue with any viewpoint that insists morality comes from a God, where wanting to escape from religion is equated with wanting to escape from morality and common decency. Escaping from religion is like taking a breath on your own, for the first time. </text>

              <text>To the Editor:

Last week, the size of the Grizzly's opinions section was quite impressive. Regrettably, its lack of quality articles was equally so.

The previous Grizzly saw the appearanceof Mr. Ronning's highly controversial and exquisitely written piece on helping students who have, as yet, no well-defined sexual identity. The most recent issue brought the expected outpouring of student and faculty response. What offends me is not any opnion expressed, but that a wonderfully crafted letter could be answered with such embarrassing prattle.

Mr. Ronning's argument is carefully delineated: an opening, three supporting points and a closing; and parentheses surround a genuinely parenthetical thought. He also withholds truth; makes generalizations; surrounds opinion with fact, fostering confusion of the two; and makes some quite unpleasant implications. All of these are admirable, perfectly legal techniques designed to strengthen his letter's impact.

Virtually all of the responses, however, fail to live up to Ronning's standard. In their zeal to discredit Ronning's perceived understanding or improving upon the devices of his letter, Ms. Jones misses both the motivation for Ronning's harsh language and the multiple meanings of the word "liberal." Ms. Slyvester writes of his "explicit suggestion" (which I assume is akin to an "obvious subtlety") and then fails to recognize his generlizations as anything but a factual blanket statement. Mr. Yacoubian begins his article well enough, then proceeds to ruin it by calling Ronning sexually frustrated, a cliche as tired as the skipping, lisping gay. The self-incirminating little enigmas from Dr. Hess and Mr. Castells-Talens exhibit the same traits they suppose to condemn. The GALA Committee's letter was at times an entertaining read, but its smears, direct and indirect, were repetitive and simple. Dr. Dawley knows Ronning's purpose was to hurt. I'm sure he obtained this knowledge from Ronning himself. Even Ronning's supporters were dissapointing, condensing a potent five-line quesiton into a two-paragraph rehash of his original.

Finally, lest you think our campus writers beyond hope, I offer profuse hat-tippings to Dr. Margot Kelley. Her letter was shockingly out of place in its surroundings. It was perceptive and illuminating, employing and exposing some of those same devices I found so enjoyable in Ronning's work. I only wish she would offer a clinic in literary analysis. It's obvious that our campus could use the help. If we're going to dwell on a subject for weeks at a time, the least we could do is read our opponents' letters with care and take the time to create sound, colorful responses.

Humbly yours,
Mike Evans
