              <text>"A conductor is the most unusual of all musicians," said John French as he was inaugurated into the newly endowed William F. Heefner chair of Music on Founders' Day. "Conducting--the gestures, hand movements, facial expressions--produce no sound. It is a great act of faith that by a wave of a hand, people will respond and produce the sounds the conductor interprets."&#13;
John French conducts three choirs at Ursinus, and all of them respond by producing sounds that receive full aclaim[sic]. Mr. French is chair of the music department, and in his eight years here he has dramatically increased the level of participation in music, both in academic courses and the choral program.&#13;
"The choirs are an extracurricular activity," said Mr. French. "But to me, they're more than that. They provide an educational experience--one that does not occur in the classroom. Students don't write term papers here; they don't do research necessarily, but they learn something about performance and music through the centuries."&#13;
Upon receiving the chair during the Founders' Day convocation, Mr. French stressed that teaching was the objective of his work. And although students may only minor, not major, in music at Ursinus, he says he is "truly amazed at how much one can do with students who are not majoring in the field."&#13;
John French believes it is important for students--whether they are majoring in physics or economics or English--to open themselves up to the arts. Likewise, he feels teaching at a liberal arts college, as opposed to a music conservatory, provides a unique and stimulating environment. &#13;
"I think the warning to the 20th century arts is to be leery of isolationism--that as artists, we don't put ourselves in a corner where we no longer communicate to people. I find it personally exciting just to come to the College and have colleagues who are not associated professionally with the arts--to have good friends whose disciplines are in the humanities or the sciences. After all, ideas are communicated in music, so one must be aware about what others are thinking, what others are doing."&#13;
Amember of the Ursinus faculty since 1979, Mr. French received his bachelor of music degree at the Philadelphia College of Performing Arts in 1977 and his masters degree at Westminster Choir College in 1979. He is working towards his doctorate at the University of Concinnati. In 1982, Mr. French was the recipient of the Lindback Award for teaching excellence and a 1978 finalist in the Stokowski Memorial Conducting Fellowship sponsored by the Philadelphia Orchestra. &#13;
During the summer of 1986, Mr. French was selected to attend a National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Seminar entitled "The Culture of Mass Society."&#13;

Three dedicatory concerts were held last November in celebration of the completion of the new Heefner Memorial Organ. Its first public performance was by William F. Heefner, '42, who endowed the Heefner Chair of Music, and whose mother, Lydia V. Heefner, gave the instrument to the College. He played Johann Sebastian Bach's Toccata and Fuge in D Minor at the end of the Founders' Day convocation. Later that afternoon, Douglas Tester, organist and choir director at St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Abington, Pa., gave the first full dedicatory recital, along with the Ursinus College Choir, the Claredon Brass Ensemble, and four vocal soloists. &#13;
Finally on Nov. 19, internationally-known organist John Weaver gave a brilliant solo recital on the organ, which was recorded by WHYY-91 FM, the Public Broadcasting System's station in Wilmington, Del. The concert will be broadcast at 9:00p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11. Mr. Weaver played two encores, took eight curtain calls and received two standing ovations at the conclusion of the recital. He is director of music at the Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City, and head of the organ department at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia.</text>

The subject of a GALA chapter on this campus has been the topic of much debate over the past few weeks. I would like to point out several of the many issues contained in this debate as well as express some of my own opinions on these issues as they relate to the Ursinus campus. The issues include: the issue of the appropriateness of the letter written by John Ronning printed in the October 12 issue of The Grizzly; the issue of the rights of a special interest group versus the rights of the campus; the issue of whether the recognition of GALA by the college is in the college's best interest; and finally the issue of whether the system of decision making within the institution of Ursinus College has allowed a democratic decision regarding GALA's charter. &#13;
&#13;
The initiation of the heated debates was the letter by Mr. Ronning. Many of the objections to the letter did not concern his message but his vulgarity. Other concerns was its appropriateness for the newspaper and the question of whether a faculty member should become so vocally involved in such issues. I am sure that most would agree that vulgarity has been and still is acceptable in The Grizzly. One example of this is the horoscope column that most upper-classmen will remember as "Lucinda's column." I am also sure that the majority of the campus understand that freedom of the press allows anyone, including professors, to honestly express their feelings. Nobody has, to my knowledge, condemned Dr. Oboler for becoming involved.&#13;
&#13;
Another issue involved is the larger scale interest of gay rights. I personally believe that homsoexuals have all the rights of heterosexuals. Many of the editorials in The Grizzly indicate that Mr. Ronning's statements have been interpreted as hate for homosexuals. I believe they are correct in detecting hate in his tone; however, I interpret this hate as a hate for the practices not for the people invovled. Furthermore, there is an equal or greater amount of hate found in the letter representing GALA. This letter calls Mr. Ronning a lunatic and states that anyone who fails to condemn him is using the "meager excuse" that he has a right to such an opinion. In this way GALA is denying people the right to be intolerant of certain special interest groups. Mr. Ronning was not attacking the rights of homosexuals. He was protecting the right of the people who would potentially be counseled by GALA to hear both sides giving them the ability to make an informed decision. &#13;
&#13;
Another issue is that of whether GALA should have been recognized as a campus organization. This recognition involved the passing of their constitution by SAC, now called AFAC. This approval was given on Octboer 18, 1991, by a vote of six to two with one member abstaining and four members absent from the group. In my opinion, there are some legitimate objections to recognizing such a group. There is no doubt that this group has a right to go off campus to conduct their activities. However, Ursinus is a private school which has declared itself "related to the United Church of Christ" in the school catalog. The school does not have any obligation to sponsor a group that would contradict the morals on which the school was founded.&#13;
&#13;
The last issue invovled is one that particularly stirkes me as important. This is the atmosphere of intimidation I have recently detected on this campus. As Margot Kelley stated, faculty and staff have a certain "undeserved credibility." The opinion section of The Grizzly is an appropriate form of expression for faculty and staff to express opinions. However, I believe that the classroom and other formal group meetings are not appropriate places for faculty to make statements of their beliefs unless the purpose is to stimulate thought or discussion. I have heard negative comments about Mr. Ronning in both of these situations. I have also heard more than one case of residents assistants who are afraid to voice their opinion on this issue as well as other issues because of what they think their supervisors might think or say. The environment is an intellectual one leading to independent decisions. I feel that the recent atmosphere on campus has not been promoting such individual decision making.&#13;
&#13;
I am confident that in the future, issues such as these will be handled more civilly so that biases on campus will not prevent communiton of valuable opinions. &#13;

Dear Editor:&#13;

At the conclusion of their recent letter, the GALA executive committee urged readers to 'send a message to closed-minded, bigoted, extremist, fanatical, narrow, prejudiced, intolerant zealots on this campus and beyond." This fervent appeal was part of their retaliation for a letter from John Ronning in which he expressed disgust for certain filthy homosexual activities and questioned the value of GALA as an instrument for helping students resolve sexual identity problems. Moved by their appeal, I am offering the following as a message to them and the other "closed-minded etcetera" critics of John Ronning who directed their "vile diatribe" cf., anti-Ronning letter from Ron Hess) at him in the November 19 issue of the Grizzly. &#13;
&#13;
1. I have known John Ronning for several years and I admire his honesty, courage, and professional competence. If "homophobe" is intended to denote somone who fears homosexuality or homosexuals, that term certainly cannot accurately be applied to him. On the other hand, the storm of hate filled epithets that fill the letters of his critics, cause me to wonder whether he has cared up a horde of "Ronnophobes." &#13;
&#13;
2. Of course, John offered no "scientific reasoning" (cf. Ronnophobic letter from Dr. Margot Kelley) to prove that the activities described in his letter are disgusting. Science is an effort to understand the physical universe by constructing a logical analog that appeals to the human intellect. Moral principles transcned science and can't be derived from it. Of course, none of the Ronnophobic letters offered either scientific evidence that active homosexuality is a wholesome lifestyle nor a sequence of logical steps that lead from some aspect of the physical universe to the conclusion that those with homsoexual inclinations shouldn't seek help in overcoming them.&#13;
&#13;
For thousands of years, we have had a written moral code to reinforce the code (natural law) built into us by our Creator. Those who accept that code as a reliable guide to moral behavior are, in my opinion, on the right rack.&#13;
&#13;
3. Robert Dawley's letter implies that John's expression of revulsion for the disgusting activities of some homosexuals was an act of "cruelty" motivated by "hatred." John Ronning is honest, and sometimes blunt, but never hateful or cruel. &#13;
&#13;
In their use of epithets such as "fundamentalist right-wink kooks." the authors of the Ronnophobic letters show a shameful acceptance of left-wing stereotyping of supporters of traditional Juedo-Christian morality. They seems to regard their own outrage as unassailibly righteous and their target as self-righteous. When they employ the term "diversity" in the context of an effort to intellectually intimidate somone with a different viewpoint, I am left with the distinct impression that the word is a euphemism for liberal academic and moral orthodoxy.&#13;

Though I do not wish to engage in an extended acrimonious debate with Dr. Nagy, I would like to set the&#13;
record straight on a few points: 1. 1 did not call Or. Nagy a "narrowminded bigot." He rightly points out that since I&#13;
have no "psychic insight" into the number of right ways to love he thinks there are, I can 't conclude that he&#13;
thinks there is only one-- so I will not draw that conclusion.&#13;
&#13;
I stand by the statement that it is bigotry to advocate discrimination against people on the basis of sexual&#13;
orientation -- just as much as it is bigotry to advocate discrimination on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity, or religion. At this time, I have no reason to believe Dr. Nagy advocates that.&#13;
&#13;
2. I said that the biggest thing that causes unhappiness in the lives of gay people is prejudice and discrimination directed at them by bigots. I did not say that this is the only thing that could create unhappiness for a gay person.&#13;
People have problems of a variety of sorts, regardless of sexual orientation.&#13;
&#13;
3. Obviously in the United States, gay men are disproportionately afflicted with A.I.D.S., and that is a&#13;
tragedy. But why argue that they should change their basic sexual orientation, which essentially cannot be&#13;
changed? Argue instead against promiscuity and unsafe sexual practices. Note that in other parts of the world,&#13;
A.I.D.S is as prevalent in the heterosexual as the homosexual population.&#13;
&#13;
Note, too, that in the U.S. the category of people least likely to be affected by A.I.D.S is exclusively homosexual women. If A.I.D.S-avoidance is a reason to eschew a particular sexual "Iifestyle," wouldn't all heterosexual&#13;
women be better off becoming lesbians?&#13;
&#13;
4. I did not say that "most adult homosexuals&#13;
lack the ability to control their behavior." We all have little control over the objects of our sexual desire. I suppose that all of us are capable of controlling sexual behavior and living a celibate " lifestyle." But why? Physical intimacy and giving of mutual pleasure with someone you love is one of life's great joys. Why should it be available only to those deemed sexually correct?&#13;
&#13;
5. I certainly do not agree that adulterers and pedophiles have no ability to control their behavior. And I Consider those acts wrong for reasons other than the nature of the sexual desire involved.&#13;
&#13;
But finally, what is the point of debating whether or not it would be a wise decision for a person to choose&#13;
to be gay? That just is not how it works.&#13;
&#13;
Gay people simply are, and have always been with us.&#13;
What I am arguing is that no one should be denied civil rights on the basis of sexual orientation. Nor should people be shamed and made to feel "wrong" because of it.&#13;

                <text>Ursinus' past decade has brought continual improvements in the curriculum, in student life, and in the physical structure of the College. Few innovations were as eagerly anticipated by the student body as the addition of the Ursinus College Union, which was to serve as a centralized source for extracurricular campus activities. Many alumni--whose echoes of "there's nothing to do in Collegeville" reverberated--viewed the Union as a catalyst needed to improve campus leisure activities. The Union, now beginning its seventh year, has realized its potential to improve the social atmosphere at the College; the Union's present role is much wider than that originally projected.&#13;
&#13;
Before viewing the Union today, we might first reflect on its origins. Most alumni attended Ursinus when there was no Union, when social activities were organized by a number of campus groups, and when areas for informal get-togethers were limited to dorm lounges. The need for a College Union was eventually recognized, and plans made for its establishment. In 1969, as Myrin Library was rising above the ruins of Freeland, my classmates detoured around picket fences blocking the construction site and tracked clay-colored dust and mud into classrooms and dorms. Eventually we carried stacks of books from the Old into the New Library and then helped lay plans for the conversion of the Alumni Memorial Library into the edifice which would house the Union. We then graduated before the Union, which we nurtured in its embryonic stage, became a functioning unit of the College.&#13;
&#13;
As a member of one of the last pre-Union classes, I have found it particularly rewarding to visit the Union regularly and to sit on its Governing Board as the alumni representative, in order to see first-hand the Union's contributions to College life. The physical transformation of our library into the Union is impressive: the interior has been completely renovated to include a gameroom in the basement, numerous meeting rooms, and a modern snack bar. The ambiance of the immense main lounge is to be enhanced by a mural designed by Mr. Xaras of the Art Department. The Union is warmly decorated for the holidays and is always a friendly spot where students can relax and socialize.&#13;
&#13;
Dr. Herman Wessel, the Union's first director, viewed management of the Union's programs as essentially a student responsibility to be overseen by the Union Governing Board. His successor, Associate Dean of Students Leslie S. March, '68, has successfully continued to delegate significant responsibility to the students on the Board. Mr. Charles Fegely, the union program board adviser, and Dr. David Phillips, assistant professor of biology, assist with supervision of the Union in the evenings and on weekends. At monthly meetings of the Governing Board, project proposals are thoroughly reviewed by the students, faculty, administrators, staff, alumni and the Chancellor (Dr. Helfferich), who represent the entire College Community. Programs are funded by the activity fee paid by every Ursinus student; any annual surplus is applied toward a general scholarship fund.&#13;
&#13;
Over the years, the student leaders have served the Union with distinction; they have proven themselves consistently to be mature and capable individuals, dedicated to the tasks of continually improving the Union's successful programs and of introducing new functions which appeal to varying student needs and interests. The students monitor a rather sizeable budget, are involved in negotiating fees for concert artists, attend to the morass of details generated when complicated programs are scheduled, seek out new ideas by maintaining close contact with their peers and with leaders of other College Unions. In every succeeding year, the newly-elected student leaders have profited from the experiences of their predecessors so that Union programs improve continually.&#13;
&#13;
In addition to the major concerts, movies, dances, and coffeehouses sponsored by the Union, a number of new Ursinus traditions are being established. Every fall, the Union sponsors a Record Breaker such as the world's largest puzzle, which once assembled on the football field, bodly announced "the Union does it again!" During the annual Casino Night, the Union is transformed into Atlantic City West and Roaring 20s costumed are worn y participants in the floor show. The spring Fun Run raises money for charity. During Superstars Week, student teams engage in a series of athletic endeavors, culminating in an ice cream eating contest. The College Bowl, an academic intercollegiate competition previously unknown to Ursinus' current student body, has been reinstituted, and mini-courses, sometimes conducted by faculty, administrators, or members of the community, acquaint participants with such varied subjects as woodcarving, winemaking and bridge.&#13;
&#13;
Some Union programs provide the opportunity for informal interaction among different groups within the College Community. Members of the Board representing different constituencies have successfully involved all branches of the Ursinus family in the Union's activities. At an annual fall buffet, student leaders and faculty advisors informally discuss upcoming plans for student organizations. Students, faculty, and administrators prepare gourmet dishes with a foreign flair for the International Dessert Festival, attended by all who enjoy good eating. Meeting rooms provide a pleasant setting for student-faculty discussions. In honor of the Union's fifth anniversary, alumni who worked in the Union were invited back to attend a buffet and birthday celebration.&#13;
&#13;
Alumni from classes before 1972 may reflect on aspects of Ursinus' social life before the Union became a reality--when "Casino Night" was a friendly game of blackjack, when the "International Buffet" consisted of Japanese sardines and Spanish olives purchased at the local market, when the most popular mini-course was conducted by the juniors who gave sophomores tips for preparing for Organic Chemistry pop hourlys, and when the year's most popular concert may have been an impromptu sing-along in the dorm. Traditions such as these (and others unmentioned) still abound and will never be supplanted by Union programs. What the Union has offered to the student body is a wider variety of well-planned activities than those which most alumni could enjoy during their days in Collegeville.&#13;
&#13;
Those of us who initially viewed the Union solely as a center for social life at the College were somewhat mistaken, although judging by the number of well-received programs there can be no doubt of the Union's positive effect on the social atmosphere on the campus. Not to be overlooked, however, are the other important manners in which the Union has enhanced the Ursinus experience for so many of its future alumni. Each year, about forty students help to finance their own educations through employment in the Union. A number of students acquire valuable skills in leadership and management through their experience in program and budget planning, and some have even looked toward careers as union directors. The Union provides one successful form for productive interaction among all segments of the Ursinus Community. It also serves to help better the campus community spirit and to help students grow as well-rounded individuals. In all of these ways, the College Union has contributed significantly to that portion of the Ursinus Experience which extends beyond the classroom.&#13;

                <text>“Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice” was a film screening one presented by the African American Africana Studies on March 13, 2012 in Pfahler Auditorium. This was a transitional time for the program as the most recent coordinator of the program, Dr. Walter Greason, recently left and the Dr. Nzadi Keita assumed the role. The film focused on Ida B. Well, a female investigative journalist who documented and exposed the horrors of lynching in the south in the 1890s and was one of the founders of the NAACP. Following the film, a discussion of Wells extensive activism including women’s rights and suffrage was held. This was one of the firsts events held by the program.</text>

Students were instrumental in the creation of this event as this was prior to the arrival of Drs Edward Onaci and Patricia Lott.
