<text>CLARK MEMORIAL ORGAN DEDICATED
Mrs. Clark's Magnificent Gift Officially Dedicated on Saturday
With the College Chapel filled to overflowing, amid solemn prayers, fitting speeches and thrilling strains of music from both throat and pipes, the new five thousand dollar pipe organ was officially dedicated to the memory of the man whose bequest made possible this addition to our college, Mr. Charles Heber Clark, journalist and author.
The exercises were opened by a selection on the organ, "Festal Prelude in C", by Ralph Kinder, one of Philadelphia's most distinguished organists. President George Leslie Omwake then made formal announcement of the gift of the organ from Mrs. Clark, after which Rev. George Handy Wailes, D. D., in a feverent prayer to the Almighty dedicated the instrument to all things highest and of His kingdom. Following this Mrs Henry Hotz, the soloist of the day, sang "With Verdure Clad" in such a sweet yet strong soprano voice as to appeal to the most fastidious lover of vocal music.
An Adress, "Music as an Element of Culture", by Professor Daniel Gregory Mason of Columbia University followed. He said in substance: Due to the development of scientific investigation education during the nineteenth century has tended to become specialized. However, realizing the ultimate futility of this coure, a movement has recently started urging that a liberal education means the development of the passive susceptibilities as well as the active capacities and this better liberates us from our narrow selves. Literature and music are important agencies in this. Literature is detailed and concrete. Music is indefinite and hence important for some of our moods are too "general" to permit of the details of literature.
How can music by studied? The latest tendency is to study music for appreciation rather than for technique.

FAMOUS MUSICIANS THRILL STUDENTS
Mr. Ralph Kinder and Mrs. Henry Hotz Entertain at Organ Recital
As a most fitting climax to one of the greatest days in the history of Ursinus came the organ recital on Saturday. A large and intelligently enthusiastic audience more than filled all the available seats in Bomberger. During the entire evening, those present gave their undivided attention and enthusiastic applause to the highly successful efforts of the artists of the evening, Mr. Ralph Kinder, organist, and Mrs. Henry Hotz, soprano, both of Philadelphia.
The wonderful new Haskell Organ, the memorial to Mr. Clark, seemed to unerringly resound to the skillful and artistic handling of Mr. Kinder as he interpreted each number of the diversified and well chosen program. Through all possible shadings of tone and power, in the use of solo stop and combination, and in the stirring thunder of the great organ, the organist showed himself to be a master artist and carried his audience with him even as he controlled his instrument. Mrs. Hotz, as soloist, completely captivated the audience.</text>

<text>Donation of $5,000 for Memorial to Late Charles Heber Clark
On Thursday morning last, the professors and students of the college were given a great surprise when President G.L. Omwake made the announcement at the chapel service that Mrs. Elizabeth K. Clark of Conshohocken, Pa., had presented a check for $5,000 to the college. It is the donor's wish that this money be used in placing in the college auditorium a pipe organ as a memorial to her husband, the late Charles Heber Clark.
In speaking of this gift, President Omwake stated that the college would not only have this valuable addition to its equipment, a means of education especially desirable in an institution devoted to liberal culture, but that it will be to the everlasting honor of Ursinus to have in its very heart this handsome memorial to a man so distinguished as Mr. Clark.
In recognition of his learning and many accomplishments in the world of letters the college was pleased to confer upon him a few years ago the degree LL. D. Mr. Clark was a valuable member of the Advisory Council and always took an active interest in the administration and advancement of the college.
Throughout America and England, Charles Heber Clark was widely known as a novelist by the pseudonym of his earlier literary career, "Max Adeler." His most popular writings are, "Out of the Hurly Burly," "Captain Bluitt," "In Happy Hollow," and "The Quakeress." He was connected with journalism since 1865 and later became owner of an industrial journal in Philadelphia. For ten years he was secretary of the Manufacturer's Club, Philadelphia, and edited the Manufacturer, the official organ of the club. He was a recognized authority on the subject of economics.</text>

              <text>Bringing up Bomberger

If these walls could talk, what tales would they tell? As one of the oldest buildings on campus, Bomberger Hall holds a special place in Ursinus history, and therefore the renovation it will soon undergo is that of a campus treasure.

There were (and are) older buildings in the college's history. Freeland Hall, where Myrin Library now stands, was the original college building. To the west, on Pfahler's site, was the first Olevian Hall, an old Victorian farmhouse that became a women's dormitory. And of course a number of the houses on Main Street that the college has acquired and used over the years are older than Bomberger. What makes Bomberger special is that it was the first structure built expressly for Ursinus College.
Freeland Hall, built in 1848, had been the home of an academy, the Freeland Seminary, and the Ursinus Board of Directors acquired it at the time of college's founding in 1869. For several decades, it sufficed despite its lack of central heating or indoor plumbing! Everything - sleep, meals, study, worship, and classes - took place under its roof. As the college's enrollment grew, however, Freeland Hall began to feel cramped. Only some of the students boarded, so it was not so much a lack of beds or places in the dining hall, but after a couple of decades the building could no longer comfortably accommodate student activities or assemblies of the whole student body. The students hankered for a gym in particular, but the Board of Directors knew more was needed.
So, in 1890, Ursinsus's founder and first President, John Henry Augustus Bomberger, approached Philadelphia philanthropist and previous Ursinus benefactor Robert Patterson. Bomberger hoped Patterson would give the estimated total cost of $50,000.00 for the building, but of course fund-raising, then as now, is never so easy. Patterson promised half if the college could raise the other half from other donors. The Board of Directors got to work. When President Bomberger died two months later, they promptly resolved to name the proposed building after him. The portraits of Bomberger, the guiding light behind Ursinus from the beginning, and Robert Patterson, the college's "best friend," have long hung in the building's chapel/auditorium.</text>

              <text>Bomberger Hall Memorial Library

Major Renovations Begin

A million dollars' worth of face-lifting has begun on campus. to convert the Memorial Library into a College Union and to restore the eldest building to more efficient service.
Bomberger Hall, built in 1891 with distinctive Romanesque architecture, will cost $600,0000 in major renovations. The building presently houses the College Chapel, music, political science, economics, anthropology and sociology departments, and offers space to several student organizations.
The main chapel will be restored to its 19th century appearance. A small mediation chapel will be developed in two former classrooms behind the large chapel, to serve as the religious center on campus for all faiths. The small chapel can be divided into two sections, one for worship, and the other for counseling or group discussions.
A student recreation area in the basement will be refurbished along with men's and women's day study areas. Faculty offices and classrooms in the entire building will be modernized.
The project is supported in part by gifts from the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ, which has donated more than $200,000 to date.
The College Union will provide a space for student government and organization offices in the former Alumni Memorial Library building.
The old reading rooms will become social lounges, and the old stack areas will become a snack shop. The basement will become a recreational area, with space for ping-pong, shuffleboard, card-playing and billiards.
Meeting rooms and a music listening room will also be built into the College Union renovations, slated to cost $400,000.
The old library was vacated in fall, 1970, when the new Myrin Library was completed. Renovations toward a College Union center was delayed many times as architectural drawings were revised to stay within a realistic budget. During May the Kresge Foundation donated a $100,000 gift to the College for the project, and an additional $200,000 was earmarked from the capital drive that had begun in 1970. A special appeal will be made to recent graduates to help complete the project, since these people are most aware of the need for the College Union.
The program of the College Union will be directed by Dr. Herman Wessel, who this summer retired as chairman of the Education Department and Director of Placement of the College. A governing board of students, faculty, administration, and alumni will concern themselves with College Union affairs. Dean Ruth Harris, Director of Student Activities, will assist Dr. Wessel and a student program board in planning social events throughout the College year.
When the College Union opens, its operations and program will be financed by a $25 College Union fee to all students.
The College Union project is scheduled for completion by the beginning of 1973, with the Bomberger Hall project to be finished by June.</text>
