An account of the resource
All honor to the splendid alumni and former students who have subscribed up to November 20, the amount of $19,000. But to the many who have yet to subscribe, we are led to ask this question: do you lack interest, are you unable, or do you simply need stimulation? We hope that it is no worse than the last. But it costs money to stimulate you until you are in the proper frame of mind to respond. The subscribed want to know who the slow ones are. We present the following table of percentages of class quotas thus far subscribed and in the hands of the treasurer. Of course it is no reflection on the class representative of the slow classes. They can't make a pledge for you, you must make it yourself.

Alumni Library News
Description
An account of the resource
Dear Fred:
I was talking with the secretary of the Alumni Library Committee the other day. He showed me the list of the members of our class who have not yet subscribed to the fund, and I was surprised to see that you were one of the few who hasn't come across.
Now see here: Do you remember back in your Junior year how you used to stand up on the East Wing steps with some more of these fellows who haven't subscribed, and howl about the alumni who didn't support the college as it deserved, and how you hoped to Sam Hill that if you ever got a diploma that you'd never get to be an old fossil. And now! Here we are, alumni of comparatively few years standing, and I find that four out of the six members of that group of alumni-knockers and fossil-denouncers are non-subscribers to the memorial library. If we were not separated by two hundred miles, I would come over to Philadelphia and give you a piece of my mind.
Do you remember Sam? He was always growling about "conditions at Ursinus," but I can't see that he has done anything to help since he left the place. Yet when you compare what certain more or less offensive members of our class have done in this drive with the efforts of the "reformers," I am sure you will be ashamed.
Unless you want me to call you a fossil and a few other names which came readily to your tongue when the loyalty of the alumni of earlier days was under discussion, you will sign your pledge card for at least $100 and send it to our class representative. We must raise our quota or be forever shamed.
Your class-mate,
Ed.
P.S.--I've changed my mind about that one hundred dollars. Make it two hundred.

An Open Letter to Alumni and Former Students of Ursinus College Who Have Not Subscribed to the Library Fund
Description
An account of the resource
Fellow Alumnus:
When the Central Committee of Alumni started this fund to create a memorial for our soldier dead, it believed that it had the back of every alumnus. We still believe it. But your backing means nothing, unless it is backed by funds. Early in the campaign, we made it plain--That, we believed Ursinus men and women would not let these boys die unhonored. That, we could not build a fitting memorial for less than $50,000. That, every alumnus must assist to make it possible. That, unless every alumnus gave and sacrificed, we could not complete the project. The response of 300 alumni and nearly one hundred non-graduate students have been splendid. They have raised almost half of the fund unaided. Now, what shall the committee do? We cannot go backward, and say "We cannot build this library because 358 alumni have failed to do their part. We return you generous subscription to you with thanks and regrets." We have heard no objection to the memorial fund. None of the 358 has told the committee that it should not plan a memorial. You did not tell us in advance that you would not support the project. Now the committee must know what you are going to do. You are either for this alumni project, or against it. Save us the postage of a personal letter to you as one of the 358, and fill out one or the other of the blanks below.
Subscription
I VOTE YES:
I hereby subscribe
$50--$75--$100--$150--$200--$250--$500--$1000--$2000--$5000
to the fund for the erection of a Library Building at Ursinus College by the alumni and former students of the College, Academy, and Seminary, as a memorial to the service and sacrifice of the Ursinus alumni and students in the Great War.
Payments to be made:
One payment--immediately
Four payments: January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1, 1920
Eight payments: January 1, April 1, July 1, October 1, 1920 and 1921.
I VOTE NO:
Since I am unable to support the Alumni Library Fund with a subscription, and since it is evident that I and 357 others must do our part to make the library possible, as a former student I hereby recommend that the Alumni of the college abandon their plans for the erection of a memorial to the service and sacrifice of the Ursinus men who gave their lives for all I hold dead.
Send one or the other to your class representative today.

$26,700!
Watch us grow!
Help us grow!
This is to deny all rumors that the Library Fund has come to a stand-still. Somebody has tried to hang crepe on us, saying--"We are so sorry that the alumni of the College have failed to come to Alma Mater's assistance in honoring her soldier dead." On the contrary, we are much alive. Five hundred dollars was pledged this week. We have almost $5,000 in back. We have $26,000 pledged. Are we all in a fuss and fume because you haven't subscribed? Emphatically no! And why? Because as alumni we believe that you are loyal to your family--your college family--You will not desert your college family any more than you will desert your family of flesh and blood. Of course, we know--That you will fret and ache about Ursinus always wanting money. Of course she does. Dead things don't need money. You need money every day. That you will postpone your subscription until the last possible moment, perhaps evade the issue by not answering your representative's letters. But he hasn't given you up! That your sense of obligation, of loyalty, of appreciation will give you a restless conscience.

Alumni Library News
Description
An account of the resource
The most worth while news this week in the library campaign follows:
Several alumni have doubled their subscription to the fund. Others are contemplating doing so. Can you do this?
A loyal friend of the college remarks:
"The Ursinus alumni are a mighty poor bunch if they can't get $50,000 together for Alma Mater. They may as well close up shop if their success in life is to be measured by the meagre response thus far in the Library campaign." The most emphatic denials of this characterization must take the form of subscriptions from the two hundred and fifty or more bearing the degrees of the institution, who up to the present have turned a deaf ear to the Alumni Committee's representatives.
A professor in the College not an alumnus, has made a cash subscription to the library fund. This is a splendid type of loyalty to the institution. But doesn't it hurt that we as alumni haven't done our full share and that others must help?

The Memorial Library Building
Description
An account of the resource
We are pleased to present to the readers of the "Weekly" a picture of the new Memorial Library Building as it appeared on the day of the corner stone laying. The view is from a point near the power house looking south. The incline leading to the scaffold, seen on the left, is at the rear of the building. The chairs arranged for the ceremonies are on the corner nearest Bomberger Hall.
The facing of the walls is of Chestnut Hill stone, a handsome and durable building stone of which the oldest houses of Germantown are constructed. The foundations and backing of the walls are of Skippack brown stone. The middle walls are of hard burned brick. The best of material and workmanship are going into the wall of this building which stands upon the highest point of the campus with a bed of solid rock more than one hundred feet thick underlying it.
Libraries should be built to endure and this one is being erected with this end in view. It will be a safe and permanent place for keeping the books and manuscripts and precious documents of the College. Two spacious fireproof vaults are being built into the basement. Who knows but what these vaults will be explored in some far distant age just as the libraries of old Babylon now buried under the debris of thousands of years, are being searched for their wealth of ancient lore.
The building will be of Colonial style. It is one hundred and three feet long and eighty feet in width from the entrance to the rear of the wings. The interior will include a richly finished vestibule containing on its walls the memorial inscriptions, a large well-lighted chamber occupying the whole of the main building for reading purposes, and the work-rooms, seminar and lecture rooms, a museum, and the office of the librarian. The book stacks, which will be in a fireproof compartment, will hold 60,000 volumes.
