Text Any textual data included in the document I was deeply disturbed by something that I heard today. As a senior, I figured I knew all there was to know about the attitudes and feelings of the students on this campus. However, this is apparently not true at all. Rarely does something that one does or says make me angry. And nothing has upset me this much before, or given me the motivation to write an article. I believe that college campuses should be the educational centers of the world, not just for academics, but for ideologies as well. Various events this week have awakened me to the fact that Ursinus is a place for academic learning alone. Expecting harmony among assorted beliefs and practices seems to be too much to ask these days. Differing political views, religions, and lifestyles appear to be jammed into a 1,100 person school where beliefs are strong and open-mindedness is lacking. I believe in free speech. By this I mean that as long as one is not demaining another group in their written or spoken words, free speech is a blessing. However, this past week has been a nightmare for free speech and action. WVOU has been the deliverer of homphobic and gay-bashing messages. The conversations between two show's DJs and callers are too graphic to write. How is it that one can find profanity and explicit sexual, stereotypical comments entertaining? The language used on the radio is enough to call for some new rules on the air but how about the content of these messages? Should these few people be allowed to criticize and degrade those who do not follow the "norm"? Should the other listeners who are tolerant and understanding of diversity have to listen to this garbage? Well, not only was this issue present on the air this week but, it was also present on the wall. GALA recetly hung a poster in Wismer lobby A reading, "HOMOPHOBIA NEEDS TO BE CURED NOT HOMOSEXUALITY." To my knowledge, this statement is not offensive. It is true that some individuals who do not agree with homosexuality may be angered by this but, the statement does not criticize heterosexuals. To my knowledge, this sign was removed from the wall by a group of students that do not agree with, or tolerate, homosexuality. And this too sickens me. It is good to have steadfast beliefs. Yet, if one has such firm beliefs, why should they feel threated by another's? These heated issues and the emtions caused by them can be channeled toward education. From an envrironment where differing opinions are able to be epxressed and heard, diversity, respect, and ultimately unity can flourish. GALA has made a suggestion with which I agree; if you do not agree with what someone says or does, you can voice that opinion. This campus would be a better place if it were filled with a variety of educational messages. Pleace, post a sign next to an existing one, or voice your opinion over the air. However, please do it with open-mindedness and kindness. Let's get all of the opinions out on the floor without cruelty. They tend to think that homosexuals, like myself, are a different kind if person, not just someone with a different sexual orientation. Many guys fumble over what to say or how to act when they discover that "that guy over there is gay!" So for all those men having difficulty dealing with gays on a social level, here are some tips I happen to have. WHEN YOU MEET A GAY MALE: TIPS FOR THE HETEROSEXUAL MALE Do not run screaming from the room...this is rude. If you must back away, do so slowly and with discretion. Do not assume that he is attracted to you. Do not assume that he is not attracted to you. Do not assume that you are not attracted to him. Do not expect him to be as excited about meeting a hetersexual as you might be about meeting a homosexual...he was probably raised by them. Do no immediately start talking about your girlfriend or wife in order to make it clear that you are straight...he probably already knows and could care less. Do not tell him that it is wrong to prefer men and that every man wants to hold and love a smooth sensual woman. These are common fallacies and should be treated as such. Do not ask him how he got this way...Instead, ask yourself how you got that way. Do not assume that he is dying to talk about being gay. Do not expect him to refrain from talking about being gay. Do not trivialize his experience by assuming it is a bedroom issue only. He is gay 24 hours a day. At this meeting the board plans to discuss a strategic diversity plan based on three campus diversity reports. These reports come from the Teagle Home Team, the Faculty Committee on Diversity, and the Presidential Committee on Race and Equality. There is a note from then-president Dr. Bobby Fong that the three recommendations “sometimes diverge”, and that the largest of these divergences concerns the implementation of a specific Chief Diversity Officer position (which one report suggests and the other two deem unnecessary). The report which argues for the new position asserts that the most pressing issues affecting campus diversity are those of “visibility and transparency,” and such a person would provide structure and clarity to all of the “diversity work” on campus. The article closes with the information that the Ursinus community can publicly discuss the reports after spring recess, and that Collegeville residents can contribute their ideas online. This article displays part of the back and forth discussions, particularly in 1987-1988, regarding the best ways to recruit and retain students of color. The article goes on to explain what the program is and why it is significant, pointing out that “ethnic and cultural diversity has not been a hallmark of the college,” and calling the Bridge Program “one of the most innovative endeavors Ursinus has taken.” It details the courses taken by the “Bridgers” and some of the field trips and side programs as well. There is another phrase central in the UCC: "Unity amidst diversity." From this religious perspective, all human beings are precious as individual parts of the human community. This viewpoint allows you to see in another what you see in yourself--a fallible human being who is coping self-consciously with the common condition of birth, growth, maturation, and mortality. You see this not just in others who look like you, live where you live, or behave like you but in everyone. Obviously, you have your own special identity--your own race, your own class, your own gender, your own private preferences, your own tastes and convictions. So do all others. And from all those special identities arises the amazing variety of human appreance and experience. It would be impossible for you to align yourself with all that human vareity in equal measure. On your personal level, you have the right--indeed, the psychological necessity--to choose friends, styles, politics, modes of expression. So do all others. You are united with others, then, not because the details of your life are the same as theirs but because you share the esssential process of self-realization as a human being who is inescapably in a community. Being united with others does not eliminate your need or theirs to make moral decisions about right and wrong behavior. Being united with them, rather, means that you and they are engaged in the fundamentally human process of pursuing a moral life--each one in his or her own way. From this perspective, you can embrace human diversity without denying your own sense of right and wrong. You can affirm yourself better because you also affirm your essential relationship with others. It is easy to make these moralistic assertions. It is more difficult to live them out on a campus and at large. But a social atmosphere permeated with the idea "that they may all be one" make it possible. In such an atmosphere, the mutual respect of people wo differ creates civility. Civility evokes reasonable language and action among them and eschews outrageous difference in words and deeds. The members of a whole and healthy community can derive a kind of enjoyment from living with "unity amidst diversity." It is a vision well worth contemplating as life at Ursinus goes forward.
