Description

Mabel Dodge: Bohemia’s Guru

Mabel Dodge existed as Bohemia’s all around Guru, whether it was love, reform, or art. Dodge strove to learn from the forerunners of just about every topic, from psychoanalysis to sex, in order to position herself on the same level as the pioneers. Dodge didn’t just wanted to be part of Bohemia; she strove to understand and explore Bohemian thought and way of life. Dodge’s advertisement of decorating services is just one small manifestation of how she created herself as a resource for those navigating radical life in Greenwich Village. The advertisement is also very characteristic of Dodge in that it conveys her own lavish language. Though it is an advertisement, Dodge’s wording suggests that she would be doing you a favor more than providing you a real service. Dodge uses phrases like “to supply ides of her own or to express ideas,” which suggest the element of artistic exploration that Dodge advocated. Another reason this is advertisement is important to history is that Dodge is establishing a business completely disconnected from her husband. The title reads “Mrs. Mabel Dodge.” During 1913, a woman would generally write her name publicly to include her husband’s first name as well. A standard advertisement would likely read “Mrs. Edwin Dodge” rather than “Mrs. Mabel Dodge.” By excluding her husband from the ad, Dodge is establishing economic and societal autonomy. Dodge is clearly establishing her artistic opinion has value and is separate from her husband’s influence.
